DWTS 14 Week 5 results: DeGraw goes

It was Latin week “Dancing with the Stars” and Gavin DeGraw was puppy-dog cute, but that didn’t cut it and this gringo was gone at the end of Tuesday night.

Still, DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff gave a very entertaining performance despite how bad and unrecognizable his samba form was. That’s a real credit to Smirnoff. She was able to access the weaknesses of her celebrity and play to his strengths. What was DeGraw’s strength? His sheer enthusiasm and willingness to exude boyish charm on stage no matter how bad his dancing was. Smirnoff came up with a beautiful entrance and a routine that actually played off of the mismatch of their abilities. The song, “Sweetheart from Venezuela” by Harry Belafonte,  actually commented on a language barrier that their dancing emphasized.

Smirnoff also knew that DeGraw was in danger because it was Latin week and while DeGraw got his highest score of the season dancing the rumba, it was his posing and commitment to the performance rather than his hip movement that got them there. Samba requires constant hip movement and a lot of booty shaking, that DeGraw just doesn’t come by naturally.

DeGraw had already been in the bottom two twice before showing that he didn’t have a large fan base.  Week 2, DeGraw and Smirnoff weren’t the low score with 21, but they scored higher than Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy who had 20 and were tied with Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya. Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy were tied with DeGraw and Chmervkovskiy for the lowest score of the first week with 20. With the combined scores of week 1 and 2, DeGraw and Smirnoff were one point ahead of Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy. Yet Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy didn’t end up in the bottom two. That week the lowest scoring team of Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani were eliminated.

Week 3, DeGraw and Smirnoff were tied for the bottom spot with four other teams: Wagner and Trebunskaya, Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy, Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus and Gilbert and Maksim. Wagner and Trebunskaya left the ballroom that week, but the next week it was Shepherd and Val. That seems to indicate two things: The teams of Gilbert and Maksim and Knight and MacManus have a strong fan base.

Knight and MacManus’ fan base is strong enough to lift her from last place on the leader board Week 4, despite that horrible choice of songs–“Bohemiam Rhapsody” for the tango. Instead, Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower were in the bottom two with Shepherd and Val. Shepherd and Val were eliminated.

Gilbert and Maksim and Knight and MacManus were at the bottom of the scoreboard–only ahead of DeGraw and Smirnoff–and yet they weren’t in the bottom two. It was Jaleel White and Kym Johnson.

White and Johnson were able to save themselves in the dance off which was a cha cha cha. Neither team had performed that dance before. They both had been given the foxtrot. Yet we know that Jaleel can move those hips and he and Johnson did some real dancing while DeGraw was mostly walking through it with Smirnoff dancing around him.

Carrie Ann Inaba said that White’s performance had “a strong cha cha flavor” while  DeGraw was “good in hold” and head judge noted that DeGraw gave his all.

Bruno Tonioli noted that White had great rhythm and fantastic turns and great shape.

It was no surprise that all the judges picked White and Johnson as the better dancers. To his credit, DeGraw noted that he had a good time and his participation on DWTS had resulted in a family reunion.

This cast has been so much more positive and filled with grace compared to the sour grapes of last season with Chaz Bono and Hope Solo. Last season also saw the introduction of three new professional dancers: Val Chmerkovskiy, Peta Murgatroyd and Tristan MacManus. Murgatroyd and MacManus are still in the competition, but consider how MacManus has not employed elaborate sets, particularly this week.

Think of Chelsie Hightower’s jungle bird concept. What about the differing scenarios for the Argentine tango that Murgatroyd, Mark Ballas and Cherly Burke thought up for their celebrity partners. The same can be said for Maksim and Hough. Johnson thought up soda fountain scenario during week 2 for the jive. White also was Stephan Urkelle for Week 3 when he and Johnson performed the rumba.

MacManus isn’t asking Knight to be anything but herself. Why not? She’s obviously a performer and has natural grace. Some of his dance moves haven’t shown her off to best effect as she is a thick girl. Compare that to the imagination Smirnoff has shown.

A look at DeGraw’s performances over the last give weeks shows a regular guy who has natural rhythm but isn’t a natural dancer. Still he was able to give entertaining performances thanks to Smirnoff’s concepts and his willingness to push himself and take on personas. Remember when he channeled both Marlon Brando and Elvis during Rock Week?

DWTS 14 Week 5: Gavin DeGraw sambas gringo style

Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Karina Smirnoff hit just the right note for Gavin DeGraw when she cast him as a tourist on a boat arriving on shore. She was the sexy Latina. He was the gringo in love. It made a great love story for Latin night.

In a white hat and faded shirt and white pants, DeGraw was charming in his aw-shucks way as he stumbled through “Sweetheart from Venezuela” by Harry Belafonte. The song is about a man telling how much he loves his girlfriend from Venezuela, but we aren’t sure if she understands anything he says because all she can say is “Si, señor.” His hands were going everywhere and he was getting the full body bounce instead of the hip shake. At points, I was sure I could see him counting. He was pretty much flat footed throughout and he also sickled here and there when he had to pivot.

Still, I have to credit Smirnoff. I could imagine this scenario: gringo dancing with a hot native girl.  The entrance on the boat was great.

Bruno Tonioli said “I don’t know if I should laugh or cry.” He enjoyed it but it was between balmy and delirious.

Carrie Ann Inaba said it was hard to tell if it was a samba because he was lacking form.

“It was more of a struggle than a samba,” DeGraw explained good-naturedly.

Len Goodman called it a gallant effort. He labeled it “more shamba than samba.”

DeGraw brought joy to the ballroom and he was fun to watch if you didn’t think it needed to be a samba. DeGraw is such a good sport and even when he’s bad he’s entertaining.

DWTS 14 Week 5: Roshon Fegan gets advice on sexy (VIDEO)

When you’re the youngest guy on a show that features hunks like William Levy or Donald Driver, it can be intimidating. Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Roshon Fegan thought he might get some friendly advice from his fellow male competitors. As it was Latin night, he went to Latin heart throb William Levy.

In the rehearsal Fegan first dresses like Levy and then shows a poster of Levy. He also asked Fegan for some tips.

The conceit is that Chelsie is a tropical bird that Fegan discovers in the jungle. Fegan doesn’t exactly smolder, but he does a PG version of sexy that’s totally fun and funky. What’s great is that it is totally in keeping with his personality and he Hightower puts some hip hop funk in the salsa. They were dancing “from Hollywood and Vines” to “Bumpy Ride” by Mohombi.

Bruno Tonioli said he loved the energy and the timing. Fegan has great timing.

Carrie Ann Inaba said Fegan was sexy “in a Disney way” and that he was on top of the beat and liked his lines.

Len Goodman said Fegan was like a young guy with his first car–“full on speed and attack” and cautioned that while high energy was good, Fegan needed to calm himself on occasion and “enjoy the journey.” That’s true. Sometimes you need to contrast the slow with the fast and that can help build up suspense.

Fegan and Hightower’s score of 26 (9, 8, 9) was second highest of the night (out of three couples who danced salsa), but for this season, their score only ranks them third for salsa. Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke earned the high score during week 3–28 (9, 9, 10).

For Monday night, Fegan and Hightower were fifth overall. Levy and Burke were tied for first with Katherine Jenkins and Derek Hough. Both teams performed the Argentine tango.

What’s bad is that Fegan and Hightower were the surviving couple of the bottom two from last week. It would be a shame for this couple to be eliminated because he does dance so well and he’s fun to watch. With the dance off, the best couple at least will go forward. The only other couple that has been in the bottom two and gone forward is Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff and they were the low score of the night with 19 points.

DWTS 14 Week 5: Five tens and a tie for first

Things were heating up on “Dancing with the Stars” on Latin night, with three teams receiving tens and a tie for the top spot. The celebrities for season 14 are all dancing well with the lowest score a 19.

Taking the top spot were two teams who performed the Argentine tango: Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and her partner Mark Ballas  and Latin telenovela heart throb William Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke. They received the exact same score with only head judge Len Goodman refraining from giving them perfect scores, settling instead for a nine.

Goodman gave a nine to TV commentator Maria Menounos and and her partner Derek Hough. With nines straight across, that team was tied for third with last week’s leader, football player Donald Driver and his partner Peta Murgatroyd. Driver and Murgatroyd received a perfect score from Carrie Ann Inaba, but an eight from Goodman and a nine from Bruno Tonioli.

Menounos and Hough performed a salsa to “The Cup of Life” by Ricky Martin. Driver and  Murgatroyd danced an Argentine tango to “Sin Rumbo” by Otros Aires.

Menounos and Hough were the high score for salsa for Week 5, but Levy and Burke, who performed a salsa during week 3, still have the high score for salsa this season.

Jaleel White and Kym Johnson scored a 24 (8, 8, 8) to be the highest scoring samba of the night, but were the second highest score for that dance. Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower received a 25 (8, 8, 9) for this samba routine during week 3. Singer/actor Jack Wagner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya received a 24 (8, 8, 8) for their samba during week 3.

At the bottom, were Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus with a 20 (7, 7, 8) and Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff with  19 (6, 6, 7).  Both teams performed a samba with DeGraw and Smirnoff performing to “Sweetheart from Venezuela” by Harry Belafonte. I think DeGraw and Smirnoff is likely to go.

DWTS 14 Week 4: Gavin DeGraw wins hearts

Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” Gavin DeGraw proved that he can perform and that he’s a true gentleman. He ended the night in fifth place with his partner Karina Smirnoff. They were just one point away from fourth place which was, surprise, the initial leading team, Katherine Jenkins and her partner Mark Ballas.

For Rock Week, DeGraw shed some of his puppy dog awkwardness and was sort of hot as he performed a tango to  “Paint It, Black” by The Rolling Stones. I have to admit, I spent too much time wondering just what was going on with Smirnoff’s face makeup. DeGraw need to keep his shoulders down and his back straight. For this style of tango, he needs to lean back more, but he was actually leaving forward from the waist. Those are typical beginner mistakes.

Head judge Len Goodman commented that his performance had flair and attitude but because he leaned forward his bum stuck out.

Bruno Tonioli also noted that his frame was bad and his shoulders were going up so much it made him look like a turtle.

Carrie Ann Inaba thought he created magic on stage and it was like watching Johnny Depp on stage, but the posture was a little strange. Pleae note, I don’t think Depp can dance either.

DeGraw and Smirnoff were the last team to perform. Before his dance, DeGraw was gracious enough to carry fellow competitor Melissa Gilbert (who with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy was the fourth performance of the night) down to the green room. Gilbert suffered a mild concussion and whiplash during her dance routine and felt dizzy and nauseous.

DeGraw and Smirnoff have been in the bottom two for the last two weeks. It would be a shame if they were eliminated when he obviously is beginning to blossom. Week 1, DeGraw and Smirnoff were tied for the bottom with Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani. Week 2, they were tied for third from the bottom with Jack Wagner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya. Week 3, there was that five-way tie for the bottom, but it was Wagner and Trebunskaya who went home. I hated Rock Week, but loved DeGraw’s development. Let’s hope he had enough fans to keep him in the ballroom.

DWTS 14 Week 4: A gentleman takes the lead

On “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, it was rock week and for the first time, Katherine Jenkins and her partner Mark Ballas weren’t the high scoring team. Jenkins and Ballas fell to fourth place while football star Donald Driver and his partner Peta Murgatroyd finished in first with 27.
But Driver and Murgatroyd were only one point ahead of two teams: Maria Menounos and Derek Hough and Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower. Both teams received the exact same score: 9, 8, 9.
Another surprise of the night, musician Gavin DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff were just one point behind Jenkins and Ballas. At the bottom were the Empress of Soul Gladys Knight and her partner Tristan MacManus. But I think fans will save them. Knight and MacManus tangoed to “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen which doesn’t strike me as a good sign for tango, American or international.
Driver and Murgatroyd were also the high score for their dance, the paso doble (which they danced to Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.”) Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were the second highest score with 24 ( “Time Is Running Out” by Muse). Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were the low score (“Conquest” by The White Stripes).
Maria Menounos and Derek Hough were the high score for tango with 26 (9, 8, 9).  Their song was “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper. There’s another song that doesn’t say tango.
