DWTS 14 Week 3: Gavin DeGraw

Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff rumba to “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel because Billy Joel inspired DeGraw when he was a struggling musician.
DeGraw’s arms have improved so much. He has possibilities, but maybe not the votes.
Bruno Tonioli loved his hip movement and his arms, but thought his turning could improve.
Carrie Ann Inaba thought his dancing was really authentic and sexy. She has Gavin fever.
Len Goodman saw good hips, more musicality through his arms and loved his progression.

DWTS 14 Week 3 results: A gentleman leaves the ballroom

With five out of 11 teams tied for the bottom spot, it was a hard call this week on “Dancing with the Stars.” Consider that no one scored below 20 this week so the competition was tough. There was the indie musician Gavin DeGraw, the TV icon Melissa Gilbert, the Empress of Soul Gladys Knight, the bubbly talk show host Sherri Shepherd and the singer and soap opera actor Jack Wagner.

  • Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya: 24(8, 8, 8)

Consider that Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had the lowest average with 21. 3 for three dances, but DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff were on a little bit ahead with 21.7. Gladys Knight, the oldest contestant, and her partner Tristan MacManus had a 22 point average. Not bad for a lady who sang while the Pips danced.  Of the five, this team had the lowest score–a 19 during week 2.

Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya had a 22.7 average and were behind Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy who had a 23.3 average. But average scores don’t really count during the eliminations. Fan voting does.

At the end of the night it was Jack Wagner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya who were eliminated. Wagner had his own style and wasn’t a bad dancer–there are not really bad dancers this season. He had a tendency to raise his shoulders instead of keeping them down and serene. He didn’t have crisp kicks and flicks in his jive. He didn’t snap his legs to their full extension and his hands were somewhat awkward. His arms didn’t transition with fluidity. He sometimes overdanced, but in another season, he would have had time to overcome that.

For me, it was a real toss up between Wagner and DeGraw, but DeGraw has that awkward puppy charm and his fans obviously came through last night.

DWTS routines

Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya:

Week 1: Foxtrot to “Sugar Town” by Nancy Sinatra 23 (8, 7, 8)

Week 2: Jive to “Gimme Some Lovin” by The Spencer Davis Group  21 (7, 7, 7)

Week 3: Samba to “Lighting Up the Night” by Jack Wagner 24 (8, 8, 8)

The samba is a touch dance for most men (maybe not William Levy) because it requires a lot of hip movement and straight knee to flexed knee. Len Goodman thought it was his best dance. His timing was much better. Wagner’s personal story was finding his biological 23-year-old daughter last year.

DWTS 14 Week 3: First tens of the season posted

How hot is the cast for this season’s “Dancing with the Stars”? Tonight, two celebrities received tens. Two went to the number one couple, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas who finished the night in first place (29) and Latin lover William Levy with his partner Cheryl Burke received one ten with two nines for 28.
Of course those tens were from Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Head judge Len Goodman has get to give a perfect score of ten this season. His highest score of the night was nine. In all, 11 nines were awarded last night.
In second with straight nines was TV announcer Maria Menounos and Derek Hough (27). Five teams were tied at the bottom with eights straight across. This will be a hard elimination!
  • Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 28 (9, 9, 10)

DWTS 14 Week 2: Gavin DeGraw channels Brando

Did you ever imagine Gavin DeGraw as a “Wild One” in the mold of a young Marlon Brando? With Karina Smirnoff in a red dress with full skirt, DeGraw was Brando meets Elvis although I can’t imagine either one of those men doing the jive.

DeGraw was in tight jeans and a motorcycle black leather jacket with a hat that he kept on throughout the dance. I’d give him props for that. DeGraw was able to do some posturing that made one think of Elvis, but did Elvis every stand straight–neck long, shoulders down and back? That’s where DeGraw as lacking besides the timing of those dastardly kicks and flicks. Probably not used to that at all.

Bruno Tonioli gave a campy leer and purred, “Leather does wonders for you” and immediately saw that it was Brando doing Elvis.  He did point out that while DeGraw feels the music, he doesn’t always kick to the music.

Carrie Ann Inaba liked that DeGraw was pushing his boundaries, but noted that his posture was a little funky. That might have been where his Brando was playing cool biker dude.  Still she said DeGraw gave an animated and lively performance.

Len Goodman thought it was an improvement over last week and liked the feel of dance, DeGraw’s attitude and his energy.

DeGraw is lovable in a lost puppy dog kind of way so we like him well enough to hope he continues into week 3.  His 21 points put him third from the bottom, just ahead of actress Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and bottom-dweller Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani.

DWTS 14 Week 2: Katherine Jenkins in first

On the second night of competition, Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and her partner Mark Ballas again received the high score of the night to a total of 52 points. Jenkins and Ballas danced the jive to “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

Disney star Roshon Fegan and his partner Chelsie Hightower also received a 26 and that brought them up to tie for second place with Latin hunk William Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke who received a 25 for a total of 49 points. Fegan and Hightower were dancing the quickstep to “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” by Good Charlotte and were the top score for the quickstep. Levy and Burke were also dancing the quickstep, but got a low score from head judge Len Goodman, a 7, while the other two judges gave them nines. They danced to “Nice Work If You Can Get It” by George Gershwin.

The smooth Jaleel White fell to fourth when his jive routine with Kym Johnson only received a 22 for a total of 48 points. They danced the jive with an eight from Bruno Tonioli and two sevens from the other judges.

Although week 1 saw no team below 20, this week two teams were only teen worthy: Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani who received the lowest score of the night with 17 and Gladys Knight and her partner Tristan MacManus who were given a 19.

That left Navratilova and Dovolani with the lowest overall score.  Actress Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were only given a 20 for their quickstep, but that left them only three points ahead of Navratilova and Dovolani.

What do you say? I say Navratilova and Dovolani should be the first to go.

DWTS 14 Week 1: Gavin DeGraw gentle but goofy

As a musician, you’d expect Gavin DeGraw to understand and be able to interpret music. Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, DeGraw with his partner Karina Smirnoff was lovable like a puppy dog, but just a little clutzy.
DeGraw doesn’t always keep his shoulders down and back and his hands need some finess–they sometimes are stiff and spread like spatulas. Yet he does have a goofy, gentle smile that charms.  DeGraw and Smirnoff were dancing the foxtrot to  “I Run to You” by Lady Antebellum. DeGraw ended up being the youngest person with the lowest score. He was in a three-way tie with Melissa Gilbert and Martina Navratilova with 20 points.
Len Goodman was kind and said he felt DeGraw “coped well with a difficult dance” but complained about his stiff in arms and legs and though he lacked musicality in in his upper body. I thought he had a bit of the deer-in-the-headlights look.
Bruno Tonioli said DeGraw had great charm and a very gentle quality to his dance but agreed with Goodman that DeGraw needed to link his moves.
Carrie Ann Inaba disagreed and said DeGraw gave a great musical interpretation
that was filled with tenderness. She thought his problem was he hyperextended his arms instead of keeping them rounded.
DeGraw and Smirnoff were at the bottom with two other couples and that’s not a good place to be.

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Pasadena’s Jaleel White lead

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were tied with Jaleel White and Kym Johnson with 26 points. Both got nines from Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba; it was head judge Len Goodman who only thought the two worthy of eights.

Both couples danced the foxtrot.

This week there was no one celebrity that was so awful your eyes hurt. Three couples were tied for last place, but with a respectable 20. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and her partner Tony Dovolani performed the cha cha cha; Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff performed the foxtrot.

Navratilova is 55; Gilbert is 47 and DeGraw is 35. Quite an age spread at the bottom. Jack Wagner is 52. It’s Gladys Knight who at 67 is the oldest contestant this season.

Knight received the same score as the youngest contestant, Roshon Fegan. They were in a group of four couples tied for fourth with 23.

DWTS 14: Gavin DeGraw

Each season, DWTS needs to have a singer and this season Gavin DeGraw is a musician, singer and songwriter. You might think you don’t know him, but if you watched “One Tree Hill” or at least seen the commercials (or parodies) then you’ve heard his “I Don’t Want to Be.”

Full name: Gavin Shane DeGraw

Partner: Karina Smirnoff

Official website

DeGraw is the song of a detox specialist (mother) and a prison guard (father). His father is Irish American while his mother is Russian Jewish. His older brother, Joey suggested that he write his own songs. Joey is also a musician. They have a sister named Neeka.  Gavin and Joey moved to New York City in 1998 and were there in 2001 when the World Trade Center collapsed.

In 2003, Gavin DeGraw’s song “I Don’t Want to Be” was chosen as the theme for “One Tree Hill.” I’ve never watched the show and I’ve heard the song. The song was used on “American Idol.” In 2004, his song “Follow Through” was used on the TV series “Scrubs” (“My Self-Examination”) and “One Tree Hill” also used the song. “Dead Like Me” used his song “Chariot” and DeGraw appeared performing the song. The song also showed up on “Boston Legal” in 2006.

DeGraw plays piano and guitar. His albums include:

The brothers opened up a rock Americana music bar in the Lower East Side of Manhattan called The National Underground in 2007. Last year they opened another venue in Nashville, TN.

DWTS 14: Vote by phone or online

During the live shows, the judges will give each couple a score based on several factors, including technical execution. But the judges’ scores alone do not decide a couple’s fate.

Phone lines, text votes (AT&T customers only) and online voting will open at the top of each performance show so that viewers can vote for their favorites. Phone and text lines will stay open until 60 minutes after the end of the show in your local time zone. Online voting will remain open until 11AM (Eastern Time)/ 8AM (Pacific Time) the following day.

In the Dancing with the Stars Results Show, the couple with the lowest combined score from judges and viewer votes will be eliminated from the competition. The scoring is divided evenly between the judges and the viewers at home, ensuring unpredictable outcomes at the end of every show. When the final two couples remain, the ultimate dance-off will determine who wins the trophy.

Viewers can vote via phone and text message for their favorites ONLY on the night they perform; online voting ends at 11AM ET/8AM PT the day following the performances. The Dancing with the Stars Results Show will premiere the week of competition on Tuesday, March 27 at 8|7c.

To vote by text message, text the word “VOTE” to your favorite couple’s number below from your AT&T phone. Message and data rates may apply.
PHONE/SMS NUMBERS:

Lines open at the beginning of each show for viewers to phone and text vote for their favorite couples and will stay open for 60 minutes after the end of the show in each time zone. The whole country can vote.

One (or more) couple(s) will be knocked out of the competition each week there is a results show. The couple with the lowest overall score is knocked out of the competition.

The scoring and format of the show is unique to the series and is not based on a standard dance championship.
