DWTS 13: It’s a Cinderfella story for Rob and JR

BURBANK, Los Angeles County, CA–Hometown advantage didn’t work for Ricki Lake and Derek  Hough had won every time he had made the finals until tonight.

Lake seemed like a sure thing. First she was partnered with Derek Hough and some people were voting for him as well as her. Lake and Hough turned in the highest overall average of (26.6). When they made the finals, how could they miss? Hough had also made the finals with Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jennifer Grey and went on to win the mirrorball.

Yet early on the results show, the bad news came: Lake and Hough were the third place couple.

That meant war vet and soap actor JR Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff would be shaking their hips against reality TV celebrity Rob Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke in the instant samba dance off.

Martinez, we know, is cool under fire, but not so Smirnoff who seemed to lose her composure during the dress rehearsals from the package shown on Monday night.  Martinez was also recovering from a bad sprained ankle from last week. Monday night, his cha cha cha performance got mixed reviews. Still soap opera fans are a loyal bunch and he also likely had the support of some military men as well.

His opponent Kardashian is Los Angeles-born and raised, graduating from USC. He had hometown advantage, but then her also had a handicap. It wasn’t his dancing, it was his sister’s decision to divorce. There was a national backlash against his sister. Would that result in fewer votes for the Rob Kardashian who was peaking at the right time?

Tuesday night, each finalist performed their favorite routine. Kardashian and Burke received a 26 for his foxtrot to “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Martinez and Smirnoff received a 28 for his jive to “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Then the two couples faced off on the samba and both earned perfect scores to “Shake Your Bon-Bon” by Ricky Martin.

This is how the two pairs stood point-wise.

JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff: 112

  • Cha Cha Cha = 24 (Monday night)
  • Freestyle = 30 (Monday night)
  • Jive = 28
  • Samba = 30

Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke: 113

  • Waltz = 27 (Monday night)
  • Freestyle = 30 (Monday night)
  • Foxtrot = 26
  • Samba = 30

Kardashian and Burke were one point ahead with the judges, but had a 25.1 average over the season. Martinez and Smirnoff had a 26.4.

Of course, to fill the time up and to increase the suspense, there were performances by the eliminated celebrity contestants. Didn’t you miss Carson Kressley?

A re-do is not Mission: Impossible for Chynna Phillips.

Yet at the end of the night,  JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff won the mirrorball, giving Smirnoff’s her first win. Tonight was truly a Cinderfella story for two men: JR Martinez and Rob Kardashian. For them to finish one and two is sort of a fairy tale ending, isn’t it?
