DWTS 13, Week 1: The results

BURBANK, Los Angeles County, CA–Los Angeles is Lakers hometown, but Lakers don’t have any luck here, at least on the show “Dancing with the Stars.” Tonight during the first week of season 13, the only professional (non-dancer) male athlete on the show was off. Sure the man formerly known as Ron Artest and his partner Peta Murgatroyd had the lowest score, but couples with lower scores have made it past week one.

Remember Master P?  That seems to say that more DWTS fans like rap music than basketball or the Lakers. At times, one might have wondered if fans were divided between football and basketball stars, but that’s not the case this season.

Football players have done well on DWTS, but not basketball players. Remember Michael Irvin? Dancing with Anna Demidova, he lasted nine weeks from a field of 16 celebrities during season 9.

Of course, football players have won DWTS. Before Hines Warner and Kym Johnson won last season, there was Emmitt Smith (and Cheryl Burke) who won season 3.

Ron Artest wasn’t Rick Fox because Fox could dance. The Canadian-born Fox was a retired basketball player, last playing for the Los Angeles Lakers (2004) when he was a celebrity contestant on season 11 of “Dancing with the Stars” in the fall of 2010 when Fox was matched up with two-time winner Cheryl Burke.

Fox had already gone beyond basketball by then. He had been on “Dirt” with a recurring role. He was a lead in “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” as Angela’s Basset’s love interest. He played the bodyguard and lover of the villainess Wilhelmina Slater (played by his ex Vanessa L. Williams) on the hit series “Ugly Betty.”

Yet even dance ability and an expert partner didn’t get Fox into the semi-finals. Fox scored well his last week on DWTS with a 10 (guest judge) and three nines for his quickstep to “Hey Pachuco” during the week when all teams were performing past iconic dances plus a team dance, there was that Bristol Palin effect. Fox and Burke might have nailed Hélio Castroneves’ iconic dance, but it was the political power of Palin–Bristol or Sarah, that resulted in many upsets throughout season 11.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas had 33. Fox and Burke had 37.

During season 11, football star Kurt Warner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya performed a tango that received a 34 (10, 8, 8, 8). Then there was the fun couple: Disney star Kyle Massey and his partner Lacey Schwimmer. They only had 35 for their paso doble (10, 9, 8, 8).

Fox and Burke with 37 were tied with Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and the eventual winners, Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. The team dances gave Brandy and Chmerkovskiy, Grey and Hough and Warner and Trebunskaya 27. Massey and Schwimmer, Palin and Ballas and Fox and Burke only received a 24 for the team dance.

At the end of the night the teams had a culmulative score of:

  • Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough: 64
  • Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 64
  • Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya: 61
  • Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke: 61
  • Kyle Warner and Lacey Schwimmer: 59
  • Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas: 57

Palin and Ballas survived to finish third despite low scores.

This season, the politically-charged figure who might skew the results is likely Chaz Bono. Bono proved that he can move, but he doesn’t really project a personality as yet. He is also out of shape. Still Chaz Bono is a hot search trend online and that could mean trouble for the other teams.

Next week, with the quickstep and the jive, the teams will need stamina and crisp action. As the only athlete celebrity left, we think soccer goalie Hope Solo will do well with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, but we’re also looking forward to more fun with Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya.

Here’s the leader board:

The first night of “Dancing with the Stars” season 13, was full of surprises. At war vet and a singer were tied for the top spot for their Viennese waltzes: singer Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani and war vet and actor J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff with 22. At the bottom was the man with the new name: Laker forward Metta World Peace with a mere 14, dancing with new pro Peta Murgatroyd. Ouch.

Activist Chaz Bono and his partner Lacey Schwimmer didn’t do so bad. They finished in the middle of the pack 17 and tied with fashion police and talk show host Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya.

DWTS 13: Register and vote!

“Dancing with the Stars” season 13 premieres tonight (19 September 2011) with 2-hours of live dancing on ABC at 8 p.m. Pacific Coast standard time and 7 p.m. central. The results show will be on Tuesday night (20 September 2011) on ABC at 8 p.m. Pacific standard time and 7 p.m. central.

If you want to vote though, don’t wait until then. Voting online requires that you be registered on the ABC website. So sign up now.

You can vote on your phone at the beginning of the show until 30 minutes after the endof the show in your local time zone. Online voting is open until 11 a.m. (Eastern) and 8 a.m. (Pacific).

Below is voting information and FAQ from ABC.

VOTING — HOW IT WORKS:

During the live shows, the judges will give each couple a score based on several factors, including technical execution. But the judges’ scores alone do not decide a couple’s fate.

Phone lines, text votes (AT&T customers only) and online voting will open at the top of each performance show so that viewers can vote for their favorites. Phone and text lines will stay open until 30 minutes after the end of the show in your local time zone. Online voting will remain open until 11AM (Eastern Time)/ 8AM (Pacific Time) the following day.

In the Dancing with the Stars Results Show, the couple with the lowest combined score from judges and viewer votes will be eliminated from the competition. The scoring is divided evenly between the judges and the viewers at home, ensuring unpredictable outcomes at the end of every show. When the final two couples remain, the ultimate dance-off will determine who wins the trophy.

Viewers can vote via phone and text message for their favorites ONLY on the night they perform; online voting ends at 11AM ET/8AM PT the day following the performances. The Dancing with the Stars Results Show will premiere the week of competition on Tuesday, September 20 at 8|7c.

Lines open at the beginning of each show for viewers to phone and text vote for their favorite couples and will stay open for 30 minutes after the end of the show in each time zone. The whole country can vote.

One (or more) couple(s) will be knocked out of the competition each week there is a results show. The couple with the lowest overall score is knocked out of the competition.

The scoring and format of the show is unique to the series and is not based on a standard dance championship.

PROCEDURE FOR ELIMINATING COUPLES:

Each week every couple receives points from the judges and votes from the public. For every couple we determine the share they received of the total points given by the judges on the night of the performances, and the share they received of the public’s votes and add these two shares together. The couple with the lowest combined total is eliminated from the show.

For example if couples A, B and C respectively receive 38, 26 and 14 points from the judges, we calculate what share these points represent of the total awarded by the judges on the night. In this example the judges gave 78 points in total, and each couples’ share of 78 points breaks down as follows: A: 38 points = 48.72% of 78; B: 26 points = 33.33% of 78; C: 14 points = 17.95% of 78. Let’s suppose that when the public votes are tallied, each couple has the following shares: A= 20%, B=40%, C=40%. To determine who’s eliminated, we combine these two shares for the total:

Couple A: 20+48.72%= 68.72%
Couple B: 40+33.33%= 73.33%
Couple C: 40+17.95%= 57.95%

In this example, the bottom two couples would be A and C, and C would be eliminated.

DWTS 13: Peta Murgatroyd

Heavens to Murgatroyd! What to do when your celebrity partner decides his name doesn’t have enough Q-factor and changes it just weeks before the show begins? That’s the kind of problem Peta Murgatroyd faces when she debuts as a professional dancer assigned to the NBA small forward formerly known as Ron Artest.

Artest has gone artistic and while it might have worked for Prince when he took on a symbol, will Artest’s new moniker, Metta World Peace,” gain fans or drive them away. MWP is similar to MVP, but is MWP looking to become a pro wrestler? Or is he just ready to begin name dropping? MWP took Lakers number 37  because Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album was No. 1 on the charts for 37 straight weeks. Wonder if this means Murgatroyd is working on a  “Thriller” dance routine for MWP.

Murgatroyd was born in Auckland, New Zealand. The originally trained to be a ballet dancer, even studying with the Kirov Ballet, but she switched to ballroom and in three months became the Australian State Champion. She placed third in the world at the British Youth Latin Championships in 2006.

Before that, she was making a name for herself at a cast member for “Burn the Floor” in 2004.  Murgatroyd traveled to 30 countries and 160 cities as part of the cast and was on Broadway when the show opened in August 2009.  Murgatroyd is in Los Angeles to find opportunity in film and television.
