DWTS 13: It’s a Cinderfella story for Rob and JR

BURBANK, Los Angeles County, CA–Hometown advantage didn’t work for Ricki Lake and Derek  Hough had won every time he had made the finals until tonight.

Lake seemed like a sure thing. First she was partnered with Derek Hough and some people were voting for him as well as her. Lake and Hough turned in the highest overall average of (26.6). When they made the finals, how could they miss? Hough had also made the finals with Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jennifer Grey and went on to win the mirrorball.

Yet early on the results show, the bad news came: Lake and Hough were the third place couple.

That meant war vet and soap actor JR Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff would be shaking their hips against reality TV celebrity Rob Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke in the instant samba dance off.

Martinez, we know, is cool under fire, but not so Smirnoff who seemed to lose her composure during the dress rehearsals from the package shown on Monday night.  Martinez was also recovering from a bad sprained ankle from last week. Monday night, his cha cha cha performance got mixed reviews. Still soap opera fans are a loyal bunch and he also likely had the support of some military men as well.

His opponent Kardashian is Los Angeles-born and raised, graduating from USC. He had hometown advantage, but then her also had a handicap. It wasn’t his dancing, it was his sister’s decision to divorce. There was a national backlash against his sister. Would that result in fewer votes for the Rob Kardashian who was peaking at the right time?

Tuesday night, each finalist performed their favorite routine. Kardashian and Burke received a 26 for his foxtrot to “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Martinez and Smirnoff received a 28 for his jive to “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Then the two couples faced off on the samba and both earned perfect scores to “Shake Your Bon-Bon” by Ricky Martin.

This is how the two pairs stood point-wise.

JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff: 112

  • Cha Cha Cha = 24 (Monday night)
  • Freestyle = 30 (Monday night)
  • Jive = 28
  • Samba = 30

Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke: 113

  • Waltz = 27 (Monday night)
  • Freestyle = 30 (Monday night)
  • Foxtrot = 26
  • Samba = 30

Kardashian and Burke were one point ahead with the judges, but had a 25.1 average over the season. Martinez and Smirnoff had a 26.4.

Of course, to fill the time up and to increase the suspense, there were performances by the eliminated celebrity contestants. Didn’t you miss Carson Kressley?

A re-do is not Mission: Impossible for Chynna Phillips.

Yet at the end of the night,  JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff won the mirrorball, giving Smirnoff’s her first win. Tonight was truly a Cinderfella story for two men: JR Martinez and Rob Kardashian. For them to finish one and two is sort of a fairy tale ending, isn’t it?

DWTS 13, Week 8: JR is a perfect 60

BURBANK, Los Angeles County, CA–Last night, was perfect for J.R. Martinez as he topped the leader board with perfect 30s for both his dances. That means, Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff had the first and second perfect scores of DWTS season 13.

The big breakthrough last night was Hope Solo. She finally was able to dance with heels and she received three nines for her quickstep. Solo, more than Lake, has the stamina. Solo and her professional dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy ended the night tied for second with Ricki Lake and her partner Derek Hough.

Solo and Chmerkovskiy scored one point better on their instant dance.

The instant dance favors the female celebrities. If they’ve finally learned how to follow, then their professional partner will lead. All the professional dancers have experience with instant dances because most competitions require heats where the music played isn’t chosen beforehand.

For that reason, Smirnoff’s strategy and Martinez’s accomplishment (receiving a perfect score) are particularly noteworthy. Yet we also want to give Robert Kardashian credit for his efforts to lead. It’s not an easy experience for a total novice dancer like Kardashian and Burke has did a good job preparing him for it.

Nancy Grace seems a bit lost. Sure she’s older than the other competitors, but she doesn’t take the stage or emote. There’s a lot of stiffness between moves and she doesn’t take advantage of the still moments. We think it’s time for Grace to go although we do love her partner Tristan MacManus and we’ve finally managed to get used to his lovely accent.

DWTS 13, Week 6: JR and Ricki on top; Chaz at bottom

Tonight on “Dancing with the Stars,” it was Broadway week and Carson Kressley was sorely missed. We’re glad they brought Kressley back as a “creative director.”

Vote online

Again, J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff were on top, but they were joined by Ricki Lake and her partner Derek Hough.

Both teams performed the quickstep and received two tens–both from Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Head judge Len Goodman didn’t think these teams were perfection.

The real surprise of the night was who finished in third place: Nancy Grace and her partner Tristan MacManus. Nancy received her first nine. Not bad for the oldest competitor this season.

Chaz Bono and his partner Lacey Schwimmer returned to the bottom with a 19 for their tango performed to “The Phantom of the Opera.” Still, it is likely that Bono will survive tomorrow night’s elimination.

Probably the couple really in danger is soccer player Hope Solo and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy who were just one point ahead of Bono and Schwimmer with a 20 for their rumba to “Season of Love” from the musical “Rent.”

DWTS 13 Week 4: Movie score week finds a leading lady

Tonight was movie score week on “Dancing with the Stars” and the night belonged to a certain leading lady: Ricki Lake and her partner Derek Hough were the first couple to receive a 10 this season.

Lake and Hough performed a tango to the theme of “Psycho” and only head judge Len Goodman thought they were less than perfect.

Vote online

Only one other team performed a tango tonight: Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani. They received a 21 for their performance to the theme from “Mission: Impossible.”  That was a hard tumble down from their 26 last week.

In second was J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff with a 26 for a foxtrot to the Theme from “The Pink Panther.” This is the same score the couple received last week.

Hope Solo and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy also received the same score they did last week (24) as did Rob Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke. Both teams performed a paso doble. Solo and Chmerkovskiy to “You’ve Got  a Friend” from “Toy Story” while Kardashian and Burke were dancing to the theme from “Superman.”

For a change, Chaz Bono and his partner Lacey Schwimmer weren’t at the bottom of the board. They were in a three-way tie for second to the bottom (with Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus and Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani). Bono and Schwimmer performed a paso doble to the theme from “Rocky.”

At the bottom was the master of camp, Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya for their Viennese waltz to “The Black Pearl” from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

Will we be saying good-bye to Kressley and Trebunskaya? I hope not because they are the fun couple of the season.

During the live shows, the judges will give each couple a score based on several factors, including technical execution. But the judges’ scores alone do not decide a couple’s fate.

Phone lines, text votes (AT&T customers only) and online voting will open at the top of each performance show so that viewers can vote for their favorites. Phone and text lines will stay open until 30 minutes after the end of the show in your local time zone. Online voting will remain open until 11AM (Eastern Time)/ 8AM (Pacific Time) the following day.

In the Dancing with the Stars Results Show, the couple with the lowest combined score from judges and viewer votes will be eliminated from the competition. The scoring is divided evenly between the judges and the viewers at home, ensuring unpredictable outcomes at the end of every show. When the final two couples remain, the ultimate dance-off will determine who wins the trophy.

Viewers can vote via phone and text message for their favorites ONLY on the night they perform; online voting ends at 11AM ET/8AM PT the day following the performances. The Dancing with the Stars Results Show will premiere the week of competition on Tuesday, September 20 at 8|7c.

To vote by text message, text the word “VOTE” to your favorite couple’s number below from your AT&T phone. Message and data rates may apply.

Lines open at the beginning of each show for viewers to phone and text vote for their favorite couples and will stay open for 30 minutes after the end of the show in each time zone. The whole country can vote.

One (or more) couple(s) will be knocked out of the competition each week there is a results show. The couple with the lowest overall score is knocked out of the competition.

The scoring and format of the show is unique to the series and is not based on a standard dance championship.

PROCEDURE FOR ELIMINATING COUPLES:

Each week every couple receives points from the judges and votes from the public. For every couple we determine the share they received of the total points given by the judges on the night of the performances, and the share they received of the public’s votes and add these two shares together. The couple with the lowest combined total is eliminated from the show.

For example if couples A, B and C respectively receive 38, 26 and 14 points from the judges, we calculate what share these points represent of the total awarded by the judges on the night. In this example the judges gave 78 points in total, and each couples’ share of 78 points breaks down as follows: A: 38 points = 48.72% of 78; B: 26 points = 33.33% of 78; C: 14 points = 17.95% of 78. Let’s suppose that when the public votes are tallied, each couple has the following shares: A= 20%, B=40%, C=40%. To determine who’s eliminated, we combine these two shares for the total:

Couple A: 20+48.72%= 68.72%
Couple B: 40+33.33%= 73.33%
Couple C: 40+17.95%= 57.95%

In this example, the bottom two couples would be A and C, and C would be eliminated.
