DWTS Cheryl Burke speaks out against domestic violence
Cheryl Burke has had success on the “Dancing with the Stars” dance floor, winning two mirrorball trophies, but now she’s using her celebrity to speak out against domestic violence.
This is a topic close to my own heart. I hope Burke took the time to call the police and the police were helpful.
The 26-year-old Burke has shot a public service announcement about domestic violence and she part of the new “Tell a gal P.A.L” campaign. PAL stands for “pass it on, act and learn.”
Pass it on means tell others that economic abuse is part of domestic violence.
Act means never underestimate how small acts like listening, can make a big difference.
Learn means empower yourself with the resources available to get you or someone else out of a violent situation.
According to the Click to Empower website, each day three women die in the U.S. as a result of domestic violence. More than one in four women will experience domestic violence and three out of four Americans know someone in a violent situation.
Seventy-one percent (71%) of women had experienced domestic violence or have a friend or family member who has.
The “Tell at gal PAL” program is sponsored by Allstate, the Good Hands people and Allstate has an Allstate Against Abuse Team which helps survivors live free from abuse.
Besides Cheryl Burke, “Ugly Betty” actress Ana Ortiz and Mira Sorvina have filmed public service announcements.
Burke details more about her abusive situation in her autobiography, “Dance Lessons” which is due out next year in February.
In 2008, Burke opened her first dance studio in San Francisco. She now has studios in Mountain View California as well as Laguna Niguel.
Burke won the mirrorball trophy during season 2 with 98 Degrees member Drew Lachey and again in season 3 with retired NFL star Emmitt Smith. She finished second with Gilles Marini during season 8. Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas won that season. Last season, Burke danced with Cincinnati Bengal Tiger Chad Ochocinco.
Burke is currently in the cast of “Dancing with the Stars” and her partner is the very tall former Laker Rick Fox. She’s five-four and he’s six-seven. She basically dancing with his chest instead of his face.
The new season of DWTS begins 20 September 2010.
