DWTS 14 Week 5: Melissa Gilbert salsa not hot enough

Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Melissa Gilbert went on despite what must have been a sore neck and some trepidation. During her salsa routine with her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, she performed the same trick that she did when she got injured. That’s one tough woman.

Gilbert has always been stiff when dancing and the injury can’t be helping. The salsa requires smooth sensuous moves and a lot of hip action that is hard for most people, but even harder when you have a fused spine and are recovering from whiplash.

Dancing to  “Aguanilé” by Hector Lavoe, Gilbert was supposed to be like the cigarette girl who meets hunky Maksim Chmerkovskiy and begins to dance. He was showing more skin than she was. She still has problems with hand and arm placement, extending and finishing her moves. Her spin was loose.

Bruno Tonioli thought she was wild and untamed. But he noted that she wasn’t on the beat and wasn’t in control.

Carrie Ann Inaba thought it was amazing how much confidence Gilbert had gained. Inaba advised Gilbert to take smaller steps because her feet get out from underneath her.

Len Goodman saw great rhythm and feel, but parts that were untidy and rough.

While Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy weren’t the low score of the night with 21 (7, 7, 7), they were the lowest score to date for salsa. Overall, they were third from the bottom with Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff at the bottom with 19 points and Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus were just one point above DeGraw and one point below Gilbert. Gilbert isn’t one of my favorite dancers here, even if I like her as an actress.
