DWTS 14 Week 9: Maria Menounos overscored for Argentine tango

Monday night (14 May 2012) on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Maria Menounos and her partner Derek Hough received a perfect score for their Argentine tango, but it was less than perfect. Menounos and Hough added that 30 to a 29 to be the top couple on the leader board.
Although one expected that head judge Len Goodman would be the deciding factor, he gave only one ten to Menounos and Hough for their Argentine tango to  “La Yumba” by Osvaldo Pugliese, but not for their jive routine to “Tightrope” by  Janelle Monae.
The Argentine tango begins with the audience only able to view the bottom half of their legs. Her ochos are clumsy and her walks don’t have the delayed action. The ganchos are a bit high and don’t follow through to full extension. One of her lunges is with a bent extended let.
Len Goodman gave a silent fabulous.
Bruno Tonioli commented that “every step had a meaning and purpose like a series of caresses,” and concluded the performance was “absolutely utterly fabulous.”
Carrie Ann Inaba gave a long list of compliments.
We were less than impressed but DWTS has its own version of the Argentine tango that has nothing to do with real Argentine tango in competition.
I wasn’t sure about the beginning of this jive routine, but it was fun and peppy–well suited for Menounos. It would have been nice if Menounos gave as much facial expression as Hough. Hough almost looks like he’s singing the song.
Tonioli thought the choreography redefined the jive, but he loved the quirky, unexpected details that seemed to combine some Fosse steps and lambada.
Inaba said it was “another stunner.”
Goodman thought it wasn’t a traditional jive with a lot of kicks and flicks, but he liked the feel of it–the rhythm and the cleverness of the choreography.
  1. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 30 (10,10,10) +29 (10,9,10) = 59/60
  2. William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 28 (9, 9, 10) + 30 (10,10,10)  = 58/60
  3. Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 28 (9, 9, 10) +29 (10,9,10) = 57/60
  4. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10,9,10) + 27 (9,9,9) = 56/60
Menounos and Hough should advance to the finals and I’m looking forward to their freestyle performance.
