DWTS 14 Week 2: Maria Menounos rises to fifth (VIDEO)

When you think Derek Hough do you think Clyde as in Bonnie and Clyde? That was sort of the premise of Maria Menounos’ second dance and she was a sweet Bonnie, but never dangerous. It was all in fun.

Dressed in a long peach-colored dress with a beret and a black eye mask, she got a kiss from Bruno Tonioli. If you think Argentine tango is close embrace, that’s nothing compared to the quickstep. Menounos was light and bouncy. They danced to “Sexy Sexy” by one of my favorite bands, Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Bruno Tonioli loved her frame. She did lose a step in the run, he noted.

Carrie Ann Inaba felt it was a huge improvement and noted they got the hold right, saying, “You guys were stuck like glue but not stiff.”

Len Goodman would have liked more body contact, but loved that they had both speed and control.

Their score tied them in the jive with William Levy and Cheryl Burke, but while that team was tied for second overall with the combined score, Menounos and Hough settled for a tie for fifth place.

Should this couple come back. A definite yes.

DWTS 14 Week 2: Jaleel falls to fourth (VIDEO)

Last night on week  2 of “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Jaleel White showed that he could be a leading man on stage as he performed a casual jive dressed as the guy behind the counter romancing a certain girl in an innocent 1950s sort of soda and burger joint. The performance wasn’t good enough for him to remain in first place. White and his partner Kym Johnson fell to fourth.

What went wrong? Footwork and posture. He’s light on his feet and nimble enough, but it lacked full extensions with his legs and feet.  There were times when it seemed like he missed the beat and his posture was too forward. He could have held his shoulders back.

Head judge Len Goodman commented that the routine “lacked real attack and speed” and there “wasn’t a crispness,” and he wanted more punch.

Bruno Tonioli commented, “You cooked a very good dish,” but also complained about the kicks and flicks.

Carrie Ann Inaba called it a fantastic performance but thought he was dancing flat footed.

White is still a delight to watch on the dance floor and although his 22 (7, 7, 8) to  “Marry You” by Bruno Mars left him in fourth place, behind first place Katherine Jenkins and Derek Hough and the two teams tied for second (Disney star Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower and Telenovela actor William Levy and Cheryl Burke), we want to see him back to dance some more.

DWTS 14 Week 1: Melissa Gilbert is sexy in black (VIDEO)

How do you remember Melissa Gilbert? Is she still that little girl from “Little House on the Prairie”? That was a long time ago although in reruns, she’ll be forever young. Gilbert is coming off of a divorce and she was once the president of the Screen Actors Guild. “Dancing with the Stars” is a chance for people to re-connect with Gilbert on an adult level. Gilbert is paired with the bad boy of the ballroom, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She did well enough, but in season 14, no couple scored below 20 points and three teams, including Gilbert and Chermkovskiy were tied for the bottom spot.
Dressed in a black lacy number, Gilbert was a bit stiff and her shoulders tended to be up. She doesn’t have that calm upper body to keep her frame and thus her free arm tends to go wild. I don’t know if all that hair helped her. Maybe another ‘do would do better. She also didn’t find a persona to express the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell for her cha cha cha. She danced to the song and was on beat, but she didn’t use the song to be someone or something.
Len Goodman asked for more hip action and better shaping of the free hand, something that Bruno Tonioli agreed with. Both Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba saw great potential in Gilbert.
The question is: Will she do better next week and will her fans keep her and Maksim on the dance floor? Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy at least have company at the bottom and who could have predicted that Gilbert would get the exact same score as tennis great Martina Navratilova?

DWTS 14 Week 1: Opera singer Katherine Jenkins fabulous on the dance floor

BURBANK, CA (Los Angeles County)–Dear Los Angeles Opera: I hope you were watching the premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” season 14 when that Welsh mezzo-soprano took the floor. Want to attract more subscribers? How about getting opera singers on to the ballroom.  Dear Ahmanson: Want to attract more theater goers to your musicals? Get a singer like Katherine Jenkins on board.

I admit I was faked out. I saw a YouTube video of Jenkins performing–singing–in concert, a piece from Bizet’s “Carmen.” She didn’t move. I thought she’d be stiff on the floor, but she was anything but.

I now hear Broadway and the West End calling.  I wish Jenkins was partnered with Derek Hough who HAS starred in a West End musical in London (“Footloose”), but we can’t have everything. It might have been too much blondeness.

Jenkins’ partner has won the mirrorball, but he has also shown some artiste (yes, with the affectation of an “e”) in some of his choreographic choices. One thinks he might be frustrated, but he is an amazing dancer. It’s too early to say if Jenkins can do sultry, but she was light and breezy in her yellow dress and effortless foxtrot to “The Show” by Lenka. I can easily imagine her as Laurie in “Oklahoma!” or, if we follow the Shirley Jones trajectory, “Carousel.”

Head judge Len Goodman complimented Jenkins on her “wonderful musicality” and lyrical movement. He loved the attention to the little details, yet he cautioned her to lift her rib cage while in hold. “That was cracking,” he summed up.

Bruno Tonioli loved the “exquisite quality of movement” and said her performance was surreal and she was “setting the bar to high” and had “a lot to live up to.”

Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “like watching two pros together” and told Ballas he had done a nice job.

Jenkins and Ballas were tied with Jaleel White and Kym Johnson. Johnson and Ballas both have won the mirrorball twice. This should be interesting. The season is off to a good start. Let’s hope that Jenkins has a fan base to carry her forward as she deserves.

  • Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas: 26
  • Jaleel White & Kym Johnson: 26

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Pasadena’s Jaleel White lead

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were tied with Jaleel White and Kym Johnson with 26 points. Both got nines from Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba; it was head judge Len Goodman who only thought the two worthy of eights.

Both couples danced the foxtrot.

This week there was no one celebrity that was so awful your eyes hurt. Three couples were tied for last place, but with a respectable 20. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and her partner Tony Dovolani performed the cha cha cha; Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff performed the foxtrot.

Navratilova is 55; Gilbert is 47 and DeGraw is 35. Quite an age spread at the bottom. Jack Wagner is 52. It’s Gladys Knight who at 67 is the oldest contestant this season.

Knight received the same score as the youngest contestant, Roshon Fegan. They were in a group of four couples tied for fourth with 23.
