DWTS 14 Week 9: Maria Menounos and William Levy are 1, 2 in the semi-finals

Monday night (14 May 2012) on “Dancing with the Stars,” had a few surprises and 14 tens. At the top of the leader board by one point was TV hostess Maria Menounos and Derek Hough with 59 points out of 60 for two dances. William Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke received 58 points.

Although one expected that head judge Len Goodman would be the deciding factor, he gave only one ten to Menounos and Hough for their Argentine tango to  “La Yumba” by Osvaldo Pugliese, but not for their jive routine to “Tightrope” by  Janelle Monae.

Goodman also gave one ten to the second-placed couple, Levy and Burke. He awarded them a nine for their tango to  “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by The Eurythmics and a 10 for their samba to  “Magalenha” by Sergio Mendes. But Carrie Ann Inaba gave Levy and Burke a nine and that scored landed them in second place.

Football player Donald Driver and his partner Peta Murgatroyd received three tens to Jenkins and Ballas’ two. It was Bruno Tonioli who was the deciding score between third and fourth. For their waltz to “Kissing You” by Des’ree, Driver received a 10 from Tonioli. For the samba to “Mr. Big Stuff”  by  Jean Knight, Carrie Ann Inaba and Tonioli both gave tens.

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas did a flirty 1930s Chicago gangster inspired quickstep to “The Dirty Boogie” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Inaba and Tonioli loved it, but Goodman noted a misstep early in the performance. For their salsa, Jenkins didn’t have the kind of heat to get a ten and had some trouble at the end with her back, so Jenkins and Ballas received straight nines for her performance to “Bananza (Belly Dancer)” by  Akon. Jenkins belly dance performance was more perky and cutesy instead of sensuous.

  1. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 30 (10,10,10) +29 (10,9,10) = 59/60
  2. William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 28 (9, 9, 10) + 30 (10,10,10)  = 58/60
  3. Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 28 (9, 9, 10) +29 (10,9,10) = 57/60
  4. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10,9,10) + 27 (9,9,9) = 56/60
With the teams to closely matched, the votes of the viewers will really count. What do we know about the DWTS audience? Over 13 seasons, six women and seven men have won the mirror ball trophy.

Women: six

  • Kelly Monaco (1)
  • Kristi Yamaguchi (6)
  • Brooke Burke (7)
  • Shawn Johnson (8)
  • Nicole Scherzinger (10)
  • Jennifer Grey (11)

Men: seven

  • Drew Lachey (2)
  • Emmitt Smith (3)
  • Apolo Anton Ohno (4)
  • Helio Castroneves (5)
  • Donny Osmond (9)
  • Hines Ward (12)
  • J.R. Martinez (13)
That’s nearly an even split. Maria Menounos might be the long shot because only one winner has been a TV hostess (Brooke Burke). Three actors have won (Monaco, Grey and Martinez) and three singers (Scherzinger, Lachey and Osmond).
Only one non-American has won (Castroneves who is Brazilian). Castroneves won over British singer Mel B. French man Gilles Marini placed second behind American Johnson. Other foreign nationals who have made the finals were: Brit Kelly Osbourne (season 9) and Chilean Cristian de la Fuentes (both finished third). Katherine Jenkins and William Levy would be at a disadvantage here.
The largest group of winners have been sports figures: Olympic gold medal figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson, Olympic medal speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, racer Helio Castroneves and football players Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward. That would give Donald Driver an advantage.
Individual dances
Over this season, not all of the four semi-final teams performed all the dances seven of the dances (Argentine tango, jive, quickstep, salsa, samba, tango and waltz) as you can see below.
Maria Menounos and Derek Hough are the high score for three dances: Argentine tango, jive and samba. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas are the top score for quickstep and waltz. William Levy and Cheryl Burke are the top score for tango and salsa.
Yet to be fair, Jenkins and Ballas performed their quickstep this week while the other remaining teams performed that dance during week 2.
Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd do not hold the top score in any of the dances performed tonight, but they have yet to perform salsa. Jenkins and Ballas have not performed the tango while Maria Menounos and Derek Hough and  William Levy and Cheryl Burke have not yet performed the waltz.

Viennese waltz: Maria Menounos and Derek Hough (28)
Waltz: Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas (29)
As of tonight, the average score of the remaining teams for 12 30-point dances (excluding Motown Marathon scores) is as follows:
  1. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 27.3
  2. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 26.8
  3. William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 26.9
  4. Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 26.4
Although Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd were in third place on the leader board at the end of Monday night (14 May 2012), they have the overall lowest average score. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas who placed at the bottom of the leader board have the highest average score of the season.
Who deserves to stay in the finals? Obviously the two top scoring teams of Maria Menounos and Derek Hough and William Levy and Cheryl Burke, but between the other two teams of Jenkins and Ballas and Driver and Murgatroyd, it’s a touch call that will be determined by the viewers.

During the live shows, the judges will give each couple a score based on several factors, including technical execution. But the judges’ scores alone do not decide a couple’s fate.

Phone lines, text votes (AT&T customers only) and online voting will open at the top of each performance show so that viewers can vote for their favorites. Phone and text lines will stay open until 60 minutes after the end of the show in your local time zone. Online voting will remain open until 11AM (Eastern Time)/ 8AM (Pacific Time) the following day.

DWTS 14 Week 6: Maria Menounos foxtrots to fifth

Last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Maria Menounos and her partner Derek Hough only did middling well for Motown Week. They did post the second highest score thus far for the foxtrot, but they were also the second couple eliminated during the Motown Marathon to the cha cha cha.

Menounos sparkles on the dance floor, but her lines aren’t as good as Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins.

We’d like to see Menounos project something on the ballroom floor more than perky.  What was weird about last night was the dark shadows on the right side of the camera. There were a few bobbles and missed timing. I did love her hair do and dress, but did you feel the funk? I didn’t. She didn’t out-mug her partner, Derek Hough.

Bruno Tonioli felt it had wit and elegance. He complimented her frame.

Carrie Ann Inaba mentioned that she thought Menounos lost her focus after her slip up and toward the end allowed her shoulders to creep up.

Len Goodman disagreed and said in hold it was correct and formal and out of hold it was fun.  He declared it a “joy to my eyes” while hearing Martha sing was a “joy to his ears.”

Menounos and Hough received 26 (8, 9, 9). Although they were fifth, consider that Goodman ranked her above William Levy and Cheryl Burke. His top teams were:

  • Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • Jaleel White and Kym Johnson: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 27 (9, 9, 9)
  • Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 26 (8, 9, 9)

Goodman ranked Levy and Burke on the same level as Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower:

  • William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 27 (9, 8, 10)
  • Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower: 23 (7, 8, 8)
The top teams last night for Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli are:
  • Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • Jaleel White and Kym Johnson: 29 (10, 9, 10)
Tonioli added fan fave Levy to that list.
Perhaps the most shocking decision last night came during the Motown Marathon to the cha cha cha. Menounos and Hough were the second team eliminated. That’s before Gilbert and Chmerkovskiy and Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower. Usually the marathon is dominated by teams with male professional dancers and celebrities of good dance ability, but aside from Ballas with his partner Katherine Jenkins, the marathon was dominated by the celeb hunks.
Menounos and Hough should be back as they’ve never been in the bottom two, but Menounos needs to bring something more to the floor because this competition is pretty stiff and other celebrities obviously have a strong and committed fan base.

DWTS 14 Week 4: Maria Menounos tied for second

Last week on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Maria Menounos and Derek Hough set tongues wagging with their steamy rumba routine. This week, it was about rock and roll and despite questionable music choices and Hough’s wild mohawk, this couple has great chemistry.
The pair danced the tango to “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper. Menounos has a stress fracture but is such a trooper. No whining. It’s hard not to root for her. She’s tough, but she seems to have a few stumbles and faulty transitions. I wish they had given them a better song.
Carrie Ann Inaba noted how much chemistry the pair has.
Head judge Len Goodman liked the aggression, but thought she lost a little control. Yet he mentioned that the had the best posture of the ladies.
Bruno Tonioli said she had beauty, attitude and sex appeal.
This couple should continue on, but at what cost? Dancing in heels can only make the stress fracture worse and as it is, dancing in heels hurts.  If she continues on, at some point she’ll have to perform two dances and lifts.
The couple ended the night tied for second with Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower.

DWTS 14 Week 3: Maria Menounos takes on Material Girl

Who would have thought the “Material Girl” as a romantic rumba? Derek Hough and Maria Menounos made this song less crass than the original last night on “Dancing with the Stars” season 14. It was all about personal stories and Menounos remembers Madonna as being her inspiration.
Seriously? Madonna? I’d want someone with more class and less crass. But as a young girl Menounos had to go with her parents on their janitorial cleaning jobs because they couldn’t afford a babysitter. When she found a quarter, she’d pop it into a jukebox for some Madonna to inspire her. She was cleaning up nightclubs so I guess I could see it in the late 1980s.
Menounos looked every bit the lady, despite some rather steamy choreography. It was sensuous but not down dirty and raunchy. I think Hough got the feeling just right.  If you really think about it, Menounos is a Cinderella story.
Bruno Tonioli said “he felt” it and he was impressed that Menounos did it on a melodic line without a beat. Here Hough was doing better than his friend and rival Mark Ballas. He took his celebrity and did the dance because both Menounos and Ballas’ partner, Katherine Jenkins, have the ability to be in hold. I’d assume that Hough helped keep Menounos on time by a subtle lead with his hands.
Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “the vertical and horizontal expression of the true horizonal desire.”
Len Goodman found it a mix of the ballroom with a bit of the bedroom.
Don’t you want to see more of Menounos? She ended the night with three nines for a 27.  This was the top score for the rumba. Menounos and Hough were in third, but only one point behind telanovela star William Levy and Cheryl Burke who were in second with 28 and one point ahead of football star Donald Driver and his partner Peta Murgatroyd. This is a tight field at the top.
  • Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 28 (9, 9, 10)
  • Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 27 (9, 9, 9)

Knight has the third highest score for the foxtrot. She danced to “Cupid” by Sam Cooke.

Dancing the jive to Jive “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine, Gilbert and Maksim received the second highest score for the jive.

DWTS 14 Week 2: Maria Menounos rises to fifth (VIDEO)

When you think Derek Hough do you think Clyde as in Bonnie and Clyde? That was sort of the premise of Maria Menounos’ second dance and she was a sweet Bonnie, but never dangerous. It was all in fun.

Dressed in a long peach-colored dress with a beret and a black eye mask, she got a kiss from Bruno Tonioli. If you think Argentine tango is close embrace, that’s nothing compared to the quickstep. Menounos was light and bouncy. They danced to “Sexy Sexy” by one of my favorite bands, Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Bruno Tonioli loved her frame. She did lose a step in the run, he noted.

Carrie Ann Inaba felt it was a huge improvement and noted they got the hold right, saying, “You guys were stuck like glue but not stiff.”

Len Goodman would have liked more body contact, but loved that they had both speed and control.

Their score tied them in the jive with William Levy and Cheryl Burke, but while that team was tied for second overall with the combined score, Menounos and Hough settled for a tie for fifth place.

Should this couple come back. A definite yes.

DWTS 14 Week 1: Maria Menounos electric in blue

Maria Menounos is partnered with Derek Hough and he’s a smart choreographer. Last night on the season premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” season 14, Menounos was the first dancers and she was fringed in electric blue.
Hough took advantage of her youth and flexibility by doing dips instead of actual steps. She still looked good and was confident in her skimpy top. Menounos and Hough performed a cha cha cha to “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson.
We learned the Menounos has an unusual laugh.
Head judge Len Goodman said that he thought Menounos did good.
Bruno Tonioli called her curvaciously delicious, but told her to “work her hips.” He advised, “Go for sultry.”
Carrie Ann Inaba called her performance strong and solid but wanted for her to go confidently from one movement to another.  In other words, she failed to make the transitions as beautiful as the points she was hitting.
With straight sevens, the couple wasn’t at the bottom, but on the lower end of the pack and tied with Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd who also performed the cha cha cha.

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Pasadena’s Jaleel White lead

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were tied with Jaleel White and Kym Johnson with 26 points. Both got nines from Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba; it was head judge Len Goodman who only thought the two worthy of eights.

Both couples danced the foxtrot.

This week there was no one celebrity that was so awful your eyes hurt. Three couples were tied for last place, but with a respectable 20. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and her partner Tony Dovolani performed the cha cha cha; Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff performed the foxtrot.

Navratilova is 55; Gilbert is 47 and DeGraw is 35. Quite an age spread at the bottom. Jack Wagner is 52. It’s Gladys Knight who at 67 is the oldest contestant this season.

Knight received the same score as the youngest contestant, Roshon Fegan. They were in a group of four couples tied for fourth with 23.
