DWTS 14 Week 3 results: A gentleman leaves the ballroom

With five out of 11 teams tied for the bottom spot, it was a hard call this week on “Dancing with the Stars.” Consider that no one scored below 20 this week so the competition was tough. There was the indie musician Gavin DeGraw, the TV icon Melissa Gilbert, the Empress of Soul Gladys Knight, the bubbly talk show host Sherri Shepherd and the singer and soap opera actor Jack Wagner.

  • Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
  • Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya: 24(8, 8, 8)

Consider that Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had the lowest average with 21. 3 for three dances, but DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff were on a little bit ahead with 21.7. Gladys Knight, the oldest contestant, and her partner Tristan MacManus had a 22 point average. Not bad for a lady who sang while the Pips danced.  Of the five, this team had the lowest score–a 19 during week 2.

Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya had a 22.7 average and were behind Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy who had a 23.3 average. But average scores don’t really count during the eliminations. Fan voting does.

At the end of the night it was Jack Wagner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya who were eliminated. Wagner had his own style and wasn’t a bad dancer–there are not really bad dancers this season. He had a tendency to raise his shoulders instead of keeping them down and serene. He didn’t have crisp kicks and flicks in his jive. He didn’t snap his legs to their full extension and his hands were somewhat awkward. His arms didn’t transition with fluidity. He sometimes overdanced, but in another season, he would have had time to overcome that.

For me, it was a real toss up between Wagner and DeGraw, but DeGraw has that awkward puppy charm and his fans obviously came through last night.

DWTS routines

Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya:

Week 1: Foxtrot to “Sugar Town” by Nancy Sinatra 23 (8, 7, 8)

Week 2: Jive to “Gimme Some Lovin” by The Spencer Davis Group  21 (7, 7, 7)

Week 3: Samba to “Lighting Up the Night” by Jack Wagner 24 (8, 8, 8)

The samba is a touch dance for most men (maybe not William Levy) because it requires a lot of hip movement and straight knee to flexed knee. Len Goodman thought it was his best dance. His timing was much better. Wagner’s personal story was finding his biological 23-year-old daughter last year.

DWTS 14 Week 3: First tens of the season posted

How hot is the cast for this season’s “Dancing with the Stars”? Tonight, two celebrities received tens. Two went to the number one couple, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas who finished the night in first place (29) and Latin lover William Levy with his partner Cheryl Burke received one ten with two nines for 28.
Of course those tens were from Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Head judge Len Goodman has get to give a perfect score of ten this season. His highest score of the night was nine. In all, 11 nines were awarded last night.
In second with straight nines was TV announcer Maria Menounos and Derek Hough (27). Five teams were tied at the bottom with eights straight across. This will be a hard elimination!
  • Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 29 (10, 9, 10)
  • William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 28 (9, 9, 10)
  • Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 27 (9, 9, 9)
  • Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 26 (9, 8, 9)

Knight has the third highest score for the foxtrot. She danced to “Cupid” by Sam Cooke.
Jive
  • Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24 (8, 8, 8)
Dancing the jive to Jive “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine, Gilbert and Maksim received the second highest score for the jive.

DWTS 14 Week 2: Jack Wagner rocks his jive (VIDEO)

You got to give it to Jack Wagner. He’s trying hard and he has to lead! What he didn’t seem to realize, at least physically, on his jive was that there’s a difference between nightclub dancing and ballroom dancing.

Jack Wagner was definitely willing to get down as he danced to “Gimme Some Lovin” by The Spencer Davis Group. Funny, I always thought the song was “Give Me Summer Loving” and I’ve been singing it wrong for a while.

Wagner is loose and full of energy, but that translates as a bit sloppy for the jive.

Len Goodman commented that he liked the content of the performance and Wagner’s attitude and energy, but lamented the loss of control. Wagner’s performance was deemed acceptable.

Bruno Tonioli commented that those bedeviling kicks and flicks weren’t on the beat.

Carrie Ann Inaba thought Wagner had overdanced it which put him out of sync with the music and Trebunskaya.

I don’t think Wagner will be going home despite this team being third from the bottom. Soap opera fans should keep him in for next week. We like him and think he has possibilities. He definitely has been dance skills than Gavin DeGraw who with his partner Karina Smirnoff received the same score (21) for the jive.

DWTS 14 Week 2: Katherine Jenkins in first

On the second night of competition, Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and her partner Mark Ballas again received the high score of the night to a total of 52 points. Jenkins and Ballas danced the jive to “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

Disney star Roshon Fegan and his partner Chelsie Hightower also received a 26 and that brought them up to tie for second place with Latin hunk William Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke who received a 25 for a total of 49 points. Fegan and Hightower were dancing the quickstep to “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” by Good Charlotte and were the top score for the quickstep. Levy and Burke were also dancing the quickstep, but got a low score from head judge Len Goodman, a 7, while the other two judges gave them nines. They danced to “Nice Work If You Can Get It” by George Gershwin.

The smooth Jaleel White fell to fourth when his jive routine with Kym Johnson only received a 22 for a total of 48 points. They danced the jive with an eight from Bruno Tonioli and two sevens from the other judges.

Although week 1 saw no team below 20, this week two teams were only teen worthy: Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani who received the lowest score of the night with 17 and Gladys Knight and her partner Tristan MacManus who were given a 19.

That left Navratilova and Dovolani with the lowest overall score.  Actress Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were only given a 20 for their quickstep, but that left them only three points ahead of Navratilova and Dovolani.

What do you say? I say Navratilova and Dovolani should be the first to go.

DWTS 14 Week 1: Jack Wagner delights

Jack Wagner didn’t have a strong start– I blame the overly cute choreography of Anna Trebunskaya, but the couple had a light and airy feel to their foxtrot last night on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Wagner has experience in musical theater, but he didn’t always move with authority and his footwork seems a bit tentative. His shoulders weren’t always down and he leaned forward–hard to miss since he is so lanky. This made everything seem loose and casual.
Bruno Tonioli felt the performance was “beautifully acted, beautifully danced” and seemed generally happpy.
Carrie Ann Inaba told Wagner, “You just took me to a happy place” and loved the
“synchronized kicking” that I hated.
Len Goodman started out nice, saying “the feel of the dance was fantastic” and the overall effect was a0″ feel good factor” but also pointed out that Wagner didn’t always hold his posture. He was, according to Goodman, “over the top a bit” and Goodman found Wagner’s footwork “hapharzard.”
Wagner and Trebunskaya were dancing to Sugar Town” by Nancy Sinatra and the theme was bright as a turquoise blue sky. The couple ended the night in a four-way tie for fourth with 23 points. That grouping included the youngest contestant (Roshon Fegan) and the oldest (Gladys Knight). Age isn’t everything, at least, not this week.

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Pasadena’s Jaleel White lead

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were tied with Jaleel White and Kym Johnson with 26 points. Both got nines from Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba; it was head judge Len Goodman who only thought the two worthy of eights.

Both couples danced the foxtrot.

This week there was no one celebrity that was so awful your eyes hurt. Three couples were tied for last place, but with a respectable 20. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and her partner Tony Dovolani performed the cha cha cha; Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Gavin Degraw and Karina Smirnoff performed the foxtrot.

Navratilova is 55; Gilbert is 47 and DeGraw is 35. Quite an age spread at the bottom. Jack Wagner is 52. It’s Gladys Knight who at 67 is the oldest contestant this season.

Knight received the same score as the youngest contestant, Roshon Fegan. They were in a group of four couples tied for fourth with 23.

DWTS 14: Jack Wagner

Soap opera fans will be familiar with Jack Wagner. He’s been in “General Hospital,” “Santa Barbara,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “Melrose Place.”

Full name: Peter John “Jack” Wagner II

Partner: Anna Trebunskaya

Hometown: Washington, Missouri

Birthday: 3 October 1959

  • Age: 52
  • Libra

College: Attended University of Missouri for one year. Later attended the University of Arizona.

Wagner’s first role (as Clint Masterson) was in a cable soap opera called “A New Day in Eden” in 1982.  The soap was soon off the air, but it was co-produced by Susan Flannery who would be a fellow cast member on “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

A year later, he was Frisco Jones on “General Hospital (1983–1988, 1989–1991, 1994–95). Jones was a WSB secret agent, a former police detective and a former performer at Duke’s club. He was married to Felicia Scorpio Jones. Former DWTS contestant Tia Carrere was also on the show as Jade Soong. Carrere was on season two and danced with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Drew Lachey won that season with Cheryl Burke and Jerry Rice with Anna Trebunskaya came in second.

Wagner was on “Santa Barbara” from 1991-1993 playing Warren Lockridge, a Don Juan who does eventually fall in love but his sweetheart, Summer Blake is killed by a serial murderer. After several twists and turns, Warren becomes a journalist and his wedding it part of the final episode. The role of Warren was originally played by John Allen Nelson (later in the series “24”), then by Scott Jenkins and finally by Wagner.

Wagner was on the night time Fox network drama “Melrose Place” from 1994-1999 as Dr. Peter Burns. Burns was introduced during season three as the evil chief of staff of the Wilshire Hospital. Burns helped Amanda (Heather Locklear) take over D&D Advertising, bails Michael out of jail, and although Burns is married, he has an affair with Amanda. Peter steals money from the hospital and flees with Amanda for a surprise ending.

Wagner also directed some episodes of “Melrose Place.”

In 2003, he joined the cast of the CBS soap “The Bold and the Beautiful.” He plays Dominick Marone, a shareholder and investor of Jackie M. Designs. He resides in Marone Mansion which is supposed to be in Los Angeles.
As a singer, Wagner has recorded five albums and had singles that made the top 100. His best showing was in 1984 with “All I Need” which went to number two. Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” was number one. His albums are:
  • 1984: All I Need #44 Peak Billboard 200
  • 1985: Lighting Up the Night #150 / Peak Billboard 200
  • 1987: Don’t Give Up Your Day Job #151 Peak Billboard 200
  • 1993: Alone in the Crowd
  • 2005: Dancing in the Moonlight
